WEATHER
(when to come to venice)

The weather in Venice is quite strange and can change a lot. Spring and Autumn are incredible in Venice – perfect temperature, clear, sunny skies and usually fewer tourists.

Summer

In summer it is so humid that you constant sweat and it can be quite unbearable for small kids. Furthermore, there are loads of tourists in summer so the streets are jam packed, hot, and stuffy. If you are coming in summer, we really advise that you stay on Lido island, where you can swim on the beach to cool off. There are several dates during the year when the number of visitors peaks to an almost uncontrollable amount, especially Carnival (February/March). There is a great website on the Venice authorities’ webpage where you can see the predicted amount of visitors to Venice on a given day, which you can use to help plan your trip.

Winter

Usually in the winter it is grey, foggy, and damp (which makes it seem colder than it really is). In the Venice lagoon the dampness penetrates your bones and can feel bitter. However, there are days when the “bora” wind blows in from the Northeast, clearing the skies to make way for spectacular views of the Dolomite mountains and you can enjoy a fresh, bright winter’s day.  If you are coming in January be warned that many restaurants and cafes completely shut for a few weeks, either to give staff a vacation or to do renovations. Some also close between Christmas and New Year.
