OPENING HOURS

opening hours in shops

Many shops in Venice close after lunch for a rest and reopen in the afternoon. Generally they’ll open at about 0930 or 1000 and close at about 1230 or 1300. They open late afternoon to evening from about 1630 onwards. Several big chain stores now stay open all day, which is called  “orario continuato”.

restaurant service hours

We know that some families like to eat dinner early if they have young kids. Or your tummies might still be on a different time zone. Be warned that this might be a problem in Venice because many restaurants don’t open for evening service until 1900 or 1930. Most restaurants open for lunch service at about midday (sometimes 1230) and then close for the afternoon. Occasionally you will find one that offers “orario continuato”, which means that it stay open during the whole day but such places are usually very touristy. Cafes and bars usually open at about 7am, with some opening earlier. They stay open all day and usually serve lunch. Most also stay open in the evenings for aperitivo and some might serve simple dishes (pasta, sandwiches etc), so this can be a good option for kids. Pizzerias are likely to be open earlier than restaurants too. Places serving fast food or “pizza al taglio” (ready made rather than made to order) are likely to be open all day but often don’t have seating. Ice-cream shops stay open very late during the summer to tempt the after dinner crowds with an ice-cream on their way home. However, be aware that the majority of ice-cream shops close completely during winter.

winter closing times

Many shops and museums have different opening and closing times during the winter. Throughout the Kids in Venice website we provide you with the opening hours of all listings, so always check at the end of the page.

my husband was once passing the San Lazzaro island mid morning and found 2 french tourists wandering around panicking because it didn't open until 1525 and there was no public transport to the island. They hopped on our boat and he took them to shore!
