Scala Contarini del Bovolo
(san marco)

Walk up the winding 15th Century stairs like a Venetian nobleman (or princess or knight or whatever the kids are into). Not only is the building stunning but the views of Venice are unmissable. The stairs are right in the middle of Venice, exactly between Rialto and Saint Mark’s square so from the top you get a basically 360 degree view of the island – you can see where the buildings stop and the lagoon begins from every angle, which does a great job of highlighting how small Venice really is. If it’s a clear day you can see the Dolomites in the background to the East. “Del Bovolo” means “like a snail” because of how the beautiful arches and curve up in a spiral.

If you’re up here on the hour when all the bells start ringing it’s a lovely experience. You can hear the bells from all around Venice reaching you from different directions.

FAMILY FRIENDLINESS

There are quite a few stairs so you might have difficulty if you have very small kids. However, it is usually not very crowded. We just leave our pram outside the gate as this is not a busy area. Children (up to 12) enter for free and the adult ticket is very reasonable.
