TAVERNA TIPICA VENEZIANI
(torcello)

Immersed in the heart of the lagoon on the original settlement island, Torcello, is this charming outdoor restaurant (only in summer). Next to the canal, there is a lovely garden with goats and a children’s play area. The food is all fresh, with lots of typical local dishes. It’s just a wonderful place to relax in the sun. They usually have fried seafood, grilled fish, prawns, sardines, often served with a side of polenta. This is a “tavola calda” type of dining, where the food is displayed behind the counter, you order and pay at the till, then take your trays, glasses and cutlery to your table. There are only a few places to eat on Torcello island and this is definitely the most relaxed place to take kids.

how to get there

Take water bus 12 from Fondamenta Nove to Burano. Change at Burano to line Torcello (which is literally just over the channel from Burano and takes a few minutes). Or make friends with a Venetian and go there by boat….!

FAMILY FRIENDLINESS

There’s space for the kids to run on the grass and a play area. Toilets are clean. The plates are edible, which the kids find hilarious.

INSIDER TIP

They have a couple of rooms here that you can book overnight. A peaceful alternative to the centre of Venice.
