Pasticceria Da Bonifacio
(San Marco)

Without a question, the best place in Venice for frittelle (special cakes for Carnival, only served in January/February). The rest of the year the cakes are, of course, still good. It’s a tiny café in a backstreet, standing room only but worth a stop. Everything is made on site in the kitchen at the back and it’s wonderful to see the chef bring out freshly baked goods for you to tuck into. This is a favourite place of all the locals, in fact we discovered it when our taxi-driver friend brought a tray of cakes to our house one day. We’ve been going there every since. As with all pasticceria (bakeries) you can order a tray of cakes to take away, which they will wrap up elegantly in paper and a bow.

INSIDER TIP

On Sundays only they bake a special, historic cake called the “Torta della Dogaressa” (The Doge’s wife’s cake)! You’ll only find it here and it’s delicious”

FAMILY FRIENDLINESS

This is a tiny bar, standing room only. But believe me the kids will love the cakes! My children often ask if we can pass by to get something.
