ALILAGUNA
(airport transfer)
From Marco Polo airport you can reach Venice either by booking a private water taxi (more expensive) or on the Alilaguna water buses.
INSIDER TIP
Don’t waste time queueing at the ticket desk. Go directly to the boat pier and buy your ticket onboard for an extra cost of one euro. Your kids will be tired after their journey and the boat ride to central Venice is more than an hour! It’s not worth missing one of the boats, especially late in the evening when they are less frequent. When you arrive at the pier there is a ticket office right in front of the boat so you can either buy your ticket there or onboard.
JOURNEY TIMES
The Alilaguna water buses take different amounts of time depending on the destination:
Saint Mark's square - about 1 hour 15 minutes
Rialto - just under an hour
Lido - about 1 hour
Fondamente Nove and the hospital (Cannaregio) - about 45 minutes
Murano - about 30 minutes
Children
Children are free up to age 5. Prams and folded pushchairs are free.
Hold tight to hands while getting on and when going down the stairs to the cabin, in winter it can be slippery if it’s foggy.

A large discount is available for people with a “Venezia Unica Imob” frequent users card (note that this is not the same as the Venezia Unica City Pass).
Tickets can be bought online at www.alilaguna.it but be warned that you will have to go to the ticket office anyway to have your voucher changed to a ticket. Also you cannot change the voucher in the arrivals hall, only the ticket office next to the embarkment piers.
Tickets can also be bought at the machine in the arrivals hall, next to the luggage belt.
There are ticket offices in the main hall after you go through customs as well as in front of the boat boarding pier.
In the city there are loads of places where you can buy tickets, see website.
You can buy a ticket ONBOARD for an extra euro.
BOARDING
When you arrive at the airport, follow the bright blue signs that say “Water transport / Trasporti via acqua”. There is a long moving walkway. At the end there is a lift or escalator that takes you down to the water transport lobby. The pier for the Alilaguna is at the end of the lobby, after the private water taxis. Have your tickets out to show the seaman when you embark. It’s a good idea to tell him your destination (although they usually ask). Once you get onboard you usually leave your prams and large bags at the top of the boat, then go down the stairs down to the seating area. It’s a bit of a struggle with kids so we recommend that you get everyone out of their buggies and fold everything up beforehand. If possible, use a baby sling. Personally, we find the best technique is for one adult to focus on the kids while the other takes all the bags and buggies on after the other passengers have embarked. Sadly you can’t see much from the windows and the engines are pretty noisy. You’ll get your first taste of how it can be uncomfortable getting round Venice with kids – watch them carefully as you get on/off the boat or when you need to take the stairs. The boat may rock so hold on to them tight. In winter months it’s very damp in Venice and the floors can get slippery. Even though they’ll probably be excited, don’t let your kids run around the boat.
