GONDOLA FERRY
"traghetto"
If you don’t want to splash out on a Gondola ride you can also enjoy a short trip over the grand canal in one of the gondola ferries “traghetto” for only 2 euros. Venetians use the “traghetto” to quickly cross the canal and usually stand up during the ride, although you can sit if you wish. It’s quite fun to cross the busy Canal Grande in one of these small boats, navigating between all the taxis and water buses. There are several crossing points, see below – look for the signs for “Traghetto” which are often on nearby buildings.
INSIDER TIP
Have your cash ready to give to the gondolier. Locals always stand and they turn around when they get on so that they are facing the correct way to disembark at arrival.
FAMILY FRIENDLINESS
You cannot take prams on these and we wouldn’t advise taking a baby in a sling either. There is not much space to sit so most people just stand. For older kids it’s a fun little treat!
The routes include:
Pescaria to San Sofia
San Tomà to Sant’ Angelo
San Samuele to Ca’ Rezzónico
Fondamente S. Lucia to Fondamenta San Simeón Piccolo
San Marcuola to Fondaco dei Turchi
Riva del Carbòn to Fondamente del Vin
Campo del Traghetto to Calle Lanza
Hours of business: 0730-2000 (festivals & weekends 0830-1930)
