About us
This is a guide for families, written by a local family who knows all the best tips for enjoying Venice. We are a family with three small children, and we know exactly how to have the best fun, eat the most amazing food, and enjoy this beautiful city in the least stressful way.
Our own experience travelling has taught us that many things a small family need are not often covered in the standard travel guides, like local playgrounds, parks, family friendly restaurants, and where to pee! We know that the thought of dragging a pram up and down the Venice bridges can be daunting and that the water buses are crowded and confusing. We also know that at the end of the day most parents would love to sit down in the sun with a large glass of prosecco and watch their kids run around a square with the local Italian kids.
We have hosted many family and friends in the tiny guest room in our attic so we know all the questions that little inquisitive heads have about life in Venice. So each week we also give you some insight into what it is like to live not just in Venice but the whole, beautiful lagoon.
I am British while my husband, who runs our Italian blog, is from Rome. We have lived in Venice for over 5 years and have two daughters and a son – all bilingual of course (or trilingual if you consider the Venetian dialect as a third language!) As a family we have travelled a lot – while pregnant, with tiny babies, with toddlers, and eventually with three kids in tow. We’ve been in Croatia, UK, Poland, Slovenia, Austria, Greece, Sweden, Norway, Japan, and all over Italy with our children. We are confident that our experience can help you enjoy Venice!
the origins
When we moved to Venice there was a seismic shift in our popularity levels and the small guest room in the attic of our house has been full of friends and family since then. We started collecting cards for restaurants and shops around Venice to make a little book for our visitors to browse, until it became so big nothing else would fit. We’d constantly get emails from friends and family asking us for restaurant tips for people they knew who were visiting Venice. Eventually we just started writing it all down to send off quickly whenever asked. Everyone would give us feedback, especially those with small kids who would often be surprised that they’d enjoyed Venice so much with children in tow. It gave us an idea…so Kids In Venice was born!
About Our Blog
Everything in this blog has been tried and tested personally by us. This blog truly reflects our tastes and gives you an idea of what we think is great in Venice.
We have eaten in every restaurant and café listed. The blog reflects our personal opinion of each establishment.
If we don’t like a place we don’t put it on our page. First, because we don’t want to give any negative reviews. Second, because places in Venice are constantly changing and everyone can have an off day.
Any suggested accommodation (hotels / apartments) has been tested by our immediate family and inspected by us during their visit.
Each entry is aimed to give you all the information you need in one place; website addressess, maps, nearest water bus stops etc.
Although this is a blog about kids you may notice that there aren’t many photos of children on our blog. This is because we believe that children have a right to privacy and they should be able to choose when they are older whether they want their pictures posted online. We have tried as much as possible to take photos without children in them or to invade anyone’s privacy. (It was not easy!)
We like to support traditional Venetian businesses run by locals. So most of our suggestions reflect this.
Each week we’ll keep you updated on local festivals, seasonal food, and give you a glimpse of what it’s like to actually live in Venice.
We would love to have your feedback on our blog. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have about Venice. Let us know if there are any topics you’d like us to add to our blog.
