ROSTICCERIA GISLON
(san marco)

This is where we always go for lunch when we’re in town – it is one of our favourites! It is completely chaotic to order and find space to sit, but that’s part of the fun. It’s on a small backstreet called Calle Bissa round the corner from Rialto near San Bartolomeo square. It doesn’t look very glamorous but the food it amazing and it is jam packed with locals at lunchtime. You can’t move because everyone orders and eats standing up.

This is a “tavolo calda” style of eatery. You can pick your food from the counters; fish and seafood are one end of the room and the counter at the other end has pasta and other classics like “Mozzarella in Carrozza” (fried mozzarella sandwiches filled with either anchovy or ham). You can eat grilled or fried seafood, prawns, or calamari, often served with polenta, and they have a delicious selection of seafood salads and marinated octopus (“insalata di polpo”).

INSIDER TIP

You can get food to take away as well.  A great option if you’re staying in self-catering accommodation. We often stop by on the way home from school to get a portion of “baccala mantecato” (creamed salt cod) or a roast chicken and potatoes. They’ll wrap it all up in a foil container for you to take home.

FAMILY FRIENDLINESS

Most people eat standing up or at the bar, but if you wait around one of the few tables might become free. Otherwise, you can go upstairs for table service (which will cost more and is less atmospheric but probably easier to order with kids). That said, we have eaten here many many times up at the bar with a baby on our lap!
